COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Explore technology tools to enhance learning opportunities for students. We will examine current research about learning and explore technology use in our practice in a collaborative and supportive environment. Bring colleagues and a unit that you are interested in enhancing.  With support, you will learn to identify opportunities for effective technology use, manage technology-rich learning, and embed technology in these units to help students master 21st century skills, such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem solving.  Leave with a fully integrated unit and bring back a package of technology equipment to your school (fully sponsored by WWSU). Folks involved in last summer's institute are encouraged to return and attend new strands to include Learning Management Systems (Edu20) and other Web 2.0 applications.  Participate as a workshop for professional development or for graduate credit from St. Michael's College.

REQUIRED TEXT(s):

Medina, John. Brain Rules: 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School.  Seattle: Pear Press, 2008.

We will use the book Brain Rules by John Medina as a supporting text for our work during the week.  It is a fascinating and accessible book looking at what we do know about brain function and its connection to learning.  Participants are required to read the text before arriving at the institute, since it will provide some continuity and research-based grounding for our learning.  Additional articles on a variety of other relevant topics will be distributed for reading and discussion throughout the week.

Goals:

   * Recognize how 21st century tools and resources enhance the learning process for students

    * Identify uses for a variety of current technologies in the classroom

    * Develop assessment rubrics and methods for assessing the impact on student learning

    * Identify real and potential issues with integrating 21st century skills in education

    • Design course content using NETS Standards and 21st century skills
